Mason suffered multiple injuries to his legs, stomach, back, shoulder, arms, neck, face, and ear. Mason was transported by Air Care to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, where he is still in Intensive Care. Mason has already had 2 surgeries, and will undergo a series of reconstructive and plastic surgeries, followed by at least a year of intense physical therapy. Mason’s doctors are hopeful that after his surgeries and physical therapy he may regain full use of his left leg, shoulder & arm and will hopefully walk again.

Mason’s health is gradually improving, thanks to a wonderful team of doctors, and the love, support and prayers of many friends, family members and the community as a whole. In order to continue to provide Mason and his family with the medical care and support they need at this time, a benefit fund called “Miracles for Mason” has been set up. A team of volunteers will be coordinating multiple efforts to raise money for the family in the coming months.

Saturday, May 22, 2010

So today marks 2 weeks here at Children's Hospital. Mason is making a little progress everyday. He has now had 4 surgeries, and will need a few more. The Plastic Surgery team sees him daily to check on his leg and to change his dressings. He is doing Physical and Occupational Therapy everyday. He is up sitting in a chair now and can go for rides in the wheel chair. He is starting to walk with lots of help and support. He still has lots of healing to do, but he is in good spirits and making little strides everyday. He still has a long road ahead of him with physical and emotional healing. There is still no indication of when he will be able to go home. When he does go home, home health care will come to the house twice a day to take care of his leg.

Friday, May 28, 2010

Mason is now at home! The doctors at Children's released him yesterday afternoon around 2:00 pm. Mason is very excited to be home, and has home health care, and will have Physical & Occupational therapy at home. It is a little difficult getting used to being at home and making any necessary changes, but will be better for Mason's healing in the long run. Today he stood up all on his own (from a sitting position), and is slowly regaining his strength. He still walks with assistance (a walker or a helping hand) and has a wheelchair for any distances over 40-50 feet. Mason will return to Children's Hospital once a week for plastic surgery, and is returning today to see his doctors to help manage his pain, as his current medications don't seem to be working properly.

Friday, July 23, 2010

It has been awhile since we have been able to give an update on Mason, but we have had a very busy schedule to keep. Mason had another skin graft surgery in July to help with his legs. The surgery went well and Mason's leg continues to heal a little more everyday. There has been a complication that will delay Mason being able to get his leg straight and walk right. Where the muscle in his leg is supposed to be growing back there is bone growing. The doctors say this is a result of the extreme trauma that Mason suffered and his body was confused on how to heal. Mason will have surgery December 22nd to have the bone removed. The doctors are very positive about the outcome of this surgery. If this surgery doesn't work, then Mason will not walk right again. Mason has also been doing lots of therapy since his release from the hospital. He has appointments with Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy and a Psychologist once a week, every week. The future looks as if he will have a surgery in April to have fat injections to help fill in his leg so it doesn't have the concave look. Then around May or June they will start to do small surgeries to repair the rest of the bite areas to help them not be so noticeable. Mason has spent his summer in and out of appointments and staying home. He is still not ready to be out of the house too much due to his anxiety levels.

Mason and I want to thank everyone for all they have done and all they continue to do. He has really enjoyed all of the cards, e-mails, facebook updates from friends, family, people who care and well wishes from people we meet when we do go out.

Thank you so much
Amie, Kyle & Mason

WE NEED YOUR HELP

We are reaching out to local businesses and community members for donations – monetary, gift cards, t-shirt sponsorships and merchandise.

Multiple benefits will be held early this summer to assist with the financial burdens during this challenging time. Gift card and merchandise donations will be used for raffles and fundraisers at the multiple benefits that will take place. All monetary donations will be put in a benefit fund account at Fifth Third Bank entitled “Miracles for Mason.” 100% of all donations will be used for medical bills, lost wages for Mason’s parents while staying at the hospital, meals at the hospital, transportation to and from the hospital and physical therapy, co-pays, prescriptions, and other unforeseen expenses as a result of this traumatic and heart-breaking incident. Any money remaining will be placed into a college fund for Mason.

We are asking for your support in hopes to provide Mason with the best possible care and to take some of the financial burden off the family at this difficult time, so that they can focus on what’s most important – Mason’s recovery. We greatly appreciate any donation you may be able to make. By donating to the “Miracles for Mason” benefit, you are provided with a way to improve the life of a wonderful little boy.

HOW TO DONATE

- Mail a check to "Miracles for Mason" to:

Miracles for Mason
6823 Britton Avenue
Cincinnati, Ohio 45227

-Come by any of the upcoming benefits and make a donation.

UPCOMING EVENTS

LOGO'S BENEFIT PARTY & We had great music first by Big Daddy's DJ Service, then by the Signal Hill Band. We had 30 raffle baskets, 2 silent auction items, and tons of awesome door prizes that we gave out, as well as Miracles for Mason Koozies and bandanas. We raised almost $6,000 at the event between door donations, raffle tickets, split the pot, silent auction, t-shirt sales & bracelet sales, and individual donations.

GREAT AMERICAN - DINNER / WILLIE CUNNINGHAM FUNDRAISER

We would like to send a big THANK YOU to all of the volunteers, friends, family members, and community members that came out to the benefit at the Great American. The event was a HUGE success - we raised $750 in food & beverage proceeds from the Great American, and $4003 from individual donations, raffle ticket sales, t-shirt sales & bracelet sales. We still need to raise a lot more money, but this is an amazing amount for our first benefit. Bill Cunningham also secured 3 donations at $1,000 each that are not included in that total.
